• When introducing a new concept in math class, create real-world problems incorporating the names of students in the class. As you solve the problem, talk out loud so that students can follow the thought processes involved. For example, when teaching the concept of elapsed time, have a student in class, let’s say her name is Denise, share her typical daily schedule, such as what time she gets up, gets to school, arrives home, eats dinner, goes to bed, and so forth. Write the schedule on the board. Then, have students figure out how much time elapses from the time Denise does one thing to the time she does something else. Using the context of a student’s real-world experiences makes the content more relevant and meaningful. After showing three or more examples where you model the thought processes, have students work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to solve additional problems.
